Forensic and non-forensic mental health nurses' approach to personality/psychopathic disorders: 'Clinical' versus 'management' perspectives

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare forensic and non-forensic mental health nurses’ perceptions in relation to their clinical or management focus for those with a diagnostic label of personality/psychopathic disorder. The method employed was a postal survey with the distribution of 1490 information gathering schedules across the UK with a response rate of 41.9% of forensic mental health nurses and 76.4% non-forensic mental health nurses being achieved. The results indicate that both groups saw these diagnostic labels more in terms of a management focus (z = -3.79; p<0.01) rather than a clinical one (z = -3.53; p<0.01) and that the forensic group scored higher on the management measure (z = -17.31; p<0.01) in relation to the non-forensic nurses (z = -11.19; p<0.01). The implications for practice are that nurses who focus more on a management perspective are less likely to facilitate therapeutic change with service users.
