Abstract
Introduction: The 10-year National Health Service (NHS) plan identifies the need for a transformational shift from analogue to digital and the introduction of a single electronic patient record. Consequently, healthcare education providers must ensure students are digitally prepared for clinical practice.
Aims: To identify and synthesise the existing literature on the benefits and challenges of integrating electronic patient record systems into simulation-based undergraduate healthcare curricula.
Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey et al five-stage framework. Electronic searches of Cinahl, Medline and Academic Search Premier were undertaken. Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria and were analysed using a thematic approach.
Results: There were 3 key themes identified: preparedness for practice; faculty readiness; and digital and IT infrastructure. The literature demonstrates that electronic patient record EPR use enhances students’ digital literacy, documentation accuracy, clinical reasoning and confidence, while reducing anxiety and supporting transitions into practice. However, significant barriers persist, including limited faculty expertise, demanding curricula, challenges in creating authentic simulated records and inconsistent access to reliable digital infrastructure and support.
Conclusions: Integrating electronic patient record systems into simulation-based undergraduate healthcare education is critical for developing digitally competent, practice-ready graduates.
Implications for practice: Further UK research is required, specifically relating to undergraduate medical, midwifery and allied health professionals. Healthcare regulators’ standards need to be updated.
