Abstract
This book chapter considers Ivan Vladislavić’s short-story collections Missing Persons (1989) and Propaganda by Monuments (1996) but focuses particularly on Portrait with Keys: The City of Johannesburg Unlocked (2006), The Loss Library and Other Unfinished Stories (2011), and 101 Detectives: Stories (2015). It argues that understanding of these texts is enhanced by reading them through the formalist and cross-cultural lens of flash fiction, sudden fiction, and the novella-in-flash; and that this reveals Vladislavić to be less of a postmodernist and more of a late-modernist than is often thought.
