Abstract
Histories of labour in early medieval Britain have tended to focus on farming rather than fishing in spite of some contributions which have emphasised the contribution of fishing to the economy and society. This article sets out the evidence for the widespread incidence of fishing weirs and boats, the labour required to build weirs and boats, and the ways in which it was organised. Ultimately, it argues that farming and fishing were interlinked activities because fishing required substantial labour and collaboration across the year as well as the coordinated management of limited resources of wood and salt; it also illustrates the potential of fishing to contribute to social stratification, lordship, and agricultural productivity.
