Abstract
This chapter explores the relationship between syntax and corpus linguistics, two disciplines often viewed as conflicting. It provides a brief historical overview and outlines the core aims of each field focussing on the long-standing debate relating to linguistic data and the contrasting methodologies from the two fields. Despite the divide between the disciplines, which are rooted in the linguistic traditions of formalism (syntax) and functionalism (corpus linguistics), the chapter examines some of the ways in which corpora have been used in syntactic analysis and reviews suggested avenues of research.
